The Environment Agency has a <a href="http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/1745440/444663/591015/?version=1&amp;lang=_e" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/business/1745440/444663/591015/?version=1&amp;lang=_e');" target="_self">published directive</a> for end of life vehicles and in summary the recycling process includes:</p>
<ul>
<li>removal and recycling of the tyres</li>
<li>removal of the battery</li>
<li>deployment of airbags</li>
<li>hazardous material removed (like mercury switches)</li>
<li>air conditioning fluid removed</li>
<li>all other fluids safely drained and removed</li>
<li>large plastic parts removed (the bumpers for example)</li>
<li>catalytic converter and oil filter removed</li>
<li>remaining glass removed and recycled</li>
</ul>
<p>The vehicle can then be crushed and the metals recycled.</p>
