Cars Can’t Just Be Crushed
Before a car goes to that great big carpark in the sky it needs to be responsibly recycled by approved centres. The Environment Agency has a published directive for end of life vehicles and in summary the recycling process includes:
- removal and recycling of the tyres
- removal of the battery
- deployment of airbags
- hazardous material removed (like mercury switches)
- air conditioning fluid removed
- all other fluids safely drained and removed
- large plastic parts removed (the bumpers for example)
- catalytic converter and oil filter removed
- remaining glass removed and recycled
The vehicle can then be crushed and the metals recycled.
