Cars Can’t Just Be Crushed

Before a car goes to that great big carpark in the sky it needs to be responsibly recycled by approved centres. The Environment Agency has a published directive for end of life vehicles and in summary the recycling process includes:

  • removal and recycling of the tyres
  • removal of the battery
  • deployment of airbags
  • hazardous material removed (like mercury switches)
  • air conditioning fluid removed
  • all other fluids safely drained and removed
  • large plastic parts removed (the bumpers for example)
  • catalytic converter and oil filter removed
  • remaining glass removed and recycled

The vehicle can then be crushed and the metals recycled.
